Opposite Luang Prabang, on the opposite bank of the Mekong River, in Chompet District, is the small village of Ban Xieng Maen. This traditional village is a Unesco World Heritage Site and is now open to eco-tourism. Close to the city, it contains a beautiful pagoda, Wat Chompet, which dominates the hill and offers a superb view of Luang Prabang and the Mekong River. It offers a glimpse of rural Lao daily life. It is a good starting point for hiking and biking in the area. More information at the Luang Prabang Tourism Office. It is possible to rent bicycles near the boat mooring.
