About 40 kilometres as the crow flies from Vientiane, in the north-east (by road heading south), lies a small mountain range called Phou Khao Khouay (1,671 m high), the mountain of "buffalo horn", which is irrigated by rivers - Nam Xan, Nam Koui and the Nam Pa - which flow into the Mekong River not far away. This Phou Khao Khouay National Biodiversity Conservation Area was established in 1993. It covers an area of 2,000 km² and includes the mountainous area and valleys, bordered to the west by the Nam Ngum Reserve
