With 2 500 inhabitants, superb fortified village of the th century nestled on its hill, Hajara is a small pearl that must be picked up at the top of a steep cliff. There is only one way: by taking the long staircase that winds up to the rampart formed by high and massive houses, attached to each other. Everything that the village needs, in food and materials of all kinds, is carried back from donkey. The old Jewish quarter, below, is the oldest part.Jewish craftsmen, the best in Yemen, almost deserted the country in 1948. The last departed about 45 years ago from Hajara. Even if they are not there, the many antique shops in the village sell some very nice rooms at more affordable prices than in Sana'a. Most of them belonged to residents of the surrounding area, who spent a long time enjoying the talent of Jewish goldsmiths.
