Nestled in the hollow of the cliffs, it is the first important town in northern Togo when coming from neighboring Burkina Faso, located only 38 km to the west. On the road, at nightfall, it is possible to see some flames of bushfires giving a fairy-tale decor to the rural landscapes on the background of hills. Dapaong is a small town where everyone seems to know each other. One does not stay a stranger for long, contacts are made very quickly. The city is particularly lively on Saturdays, market day, when you can taste an excellent tchoukoutou. Dapaong was founded by a certain Djakarta, prince of the Diyob clan, who would have been in search of new lands. However, it is likely that commercial concerns prompted the Gurma clans to settle here, as suggested by the name Dapaong, which means "new market" in Moba. The city is surrounded by vast savannah plains, interspersed with a few impressive cliffs where people would take refuge in case of invasion or war. Several elements suggest that these plains were once submerged, as the continuous line that crosses the cliffs in their upper part seems to indicate. From Dapaong, many excursions can be organized to discover the Moba country and the historical vestiges, including the caves and granaries of Nok and Maproug and the rock paintings of Namoudjoga
