On the outskirts of Lomé, in the direction of Benin, you'll find the seafront villages of Baguida and Avepozo, with their beautiful beaches lined with coconut palms. The two localities touch, only about 3 km apart. Baguida is also the historic site where explorer Nachtigal signed the agreement establishing the German protectorate over Togo. This maritime district has undergone rapid development and, in just a few years, has metamorphosed into one of Lomé's chic suburbs. Once lush and agricultural, beach hotels, shops and luxury residences are springing up all along the coastline. Most hotels have their own restaurant, offering a menu based on seafood. Many also boast a relaxation area and a beautiful private beach, where drinks and fresh fish feature prominently on the menu. On weekends, these beaches irresistibly attract city-dwellers from the surrounding area. Sea bathing is often supervised by beach hotels, as the sea is quite dangerous. Baguida is just 10 km from Lomé, past the port. It can be reached by car via national road no. 2 towards Benin. You can also get there by private cab, which you'll find at the Hollando station in Lomé (on the marina) or at the Baguida cab stand on rue Togo in the main market. The fare is around 5,000 FCFA. For collective trips, the individual fare is around 250 FCFA, but you'll have to wait for the vehicle to fill up.
