A stopover on the Romantische Straße (Romantic Road), Donauwörth has a population of around 18,000. It was founded around the 10th century on a magnificent site at the confluence of the Wörnitz and Danube rivers. Its fame was established when, in 1301, it was granted the status of a free city of the Empire. Unfortunately, it was severely damaged by the bombing raids of the Second World War, which destroyed 3/4 of its old town. The main street, Reichsstraße, with its patrician gabled houses, was rebuilt identically after the war.
