This quiet town of 2,900 inhabitants on the border of Upper Bavaria and the Allgäu is located at the intersection of the German Alpine Road and the Romantic Road. Its history dates back to the 12th century, to 1147, when Welf VI, an uncle of Frederick I (Barbarossa), founded a Premonstratensian monastery here. The monastery was disbanded during the secularization process, but its church (Welfenmünster) is still a reminder of this monastic history. The community of Steingaden has more than 50 hamlets and five churches, including the famous Wieskirche, a jewel of rococo architecture, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
