This Renaissance palace belonged to the very powerful Fugger family of bankers and today bears witness to their prosperity.
This palace belonged to the very powerful Fugger family of bankers. When the wealthy Jakob Fugger had this house built at the beginning of the 16th century, the Renaissance style imported from Italy was completely new to Augsburg. The length of the palace on the street bears witness to the prosperity of the Fuggers, if one remembers that in those days a tax had to be paid on the facades. The palace was not without historical significance: the reformer Martin Luther was interrogated here and his opponent Emperor Charles V stayed here.
