Memmingen has a little over 42,000 inhabitants and is located at the crossroads of the 2 motorways A96 and A7. Its origins are very distant since in the 4th century, the Romans had set up a military camp on the current site of the city. Founded in 1160 by Duke Welf VI, the city obtained the status of "free city of Empire" in the second half of the 13th century. It played a significant role in the great peasant revolt of 1525 through the manifesto of the Twelve Articles: this text served as a catalyst for all the scattered claims of the revolts and was the first declaration of human rights in Europe. This text was written in Memmingen.
