Kaufbeuren has a population of around 46,000 and is located in the heart of the Allgäuer Voralpenland. During the Middle Ages, Kaufbeuren was granted the status of "imperial free town", and its development and reputation grew considerably. In the 17th century, the Thirty Years' War was a catastrophe for the town: by the end of the conflict, it had only 800 inhabitants. It recovered in the 19th century, thanks in particular to the cotton-spinning industry. In 1945, Kaufbeuren welcomed 18,000 Sudeten refugees expelled from Czechoslovakia. An entire district was built, and given the name Neugablonz, in reference to the region of origin of most of the exiles: Gablonz, in Czech Jablonec nad Nisou.
