The island town of Lindau has a population of around 25,000 and lies on the beautiful Lake Constance. Its origins date back to Roman times, but the name Lindau - which means "island on which lime trees grow" - was first mentioned in 882 in a document written by a monk from St. Gallen. In fact, the town's coat of arms still features a lime tree today, and several can be seen in the streets of the town center. Since the beginning of the last century, it has become a popular summer and winter resort, whereas it was originally just a small fishing village. Montaigne was one of the artists who fell under its spell. In the middle of the water, on the port of Lindau, its major tourist attraction with its pier from which boat trips on Lake Constance depart, stands the town's emblem: a gigantic stone lion dating from the 19thcentury, sitting not far from an old lighthouse and seemingly staring at the horizon. The lion and lighthouse proudly guard the gateway to Lindau's small harbor, and are a favorite postcard motif here. There's a very special atmosphere on this small island that sets it apart from other Bavarian towns. With its harbor, seagulls and sunshine, the illusion is almost perfect: for a moment, you'd think you were on the shores of the Mediterranean. A pretty, lively little town, with colorful facades and cobbled streets, which has the particularity of being... on an island! Connected, of course, by a narrow strip of land used for both road and rail traffic.
