This pretty town of 14,000 inhabitants lies at the heart of the Altmühtal nature park. Destroyed during the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648), it was completely rebuilt and today still offers the face of a magnificent Baroque city. Its charm is the legacy of Italian architects and artists, most of whom imposed their style on the town. From 1305, Eichsätt was the capital of the Episcopal principality of Eichstätt until its secularization in 1802. In 1805, its lands became part of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Today, the small town is home to a branch of the Catholic University of Ingolstadt-Eichstätt, founded in 1980.
