Neuburg an der Donau is a charming town of 30,000 inhabitants, whose old town and modern part are separated by the sumptuous Danube that flows through it. Twenty kilometers west of Ingolstadt, it is an excellent stop-off point for strolling along the banks of the blue river. For centuries, Neuburg was the capital of the Duchy of Palatinate-Neuburg - ruled by a branch of the House of Wittelbach - and this is still reflected in its architecture today. The town's main attraction is its 16th-century castle, built not far from the Danube and marking the town's skyline.
