This small town of 19,000 inhabitants, some 15 km from Altötting, owes its fame to its castle, the longest in the world (1,051 m). The medieval heart of the town also stretches the length of the castle, wedged between the rocky fortress and the Salzach, the river that marks the border between Germany and Austria. The Dukes of Lower Bavaria, who ruled from Landshut, made Burghausen their second home, exploiting the town's strategic position as a hub for the salt trade from Hallein, a little further up the Salzach.
