Berchtesgaden is much more than just a small winter sports resort wedged between the German and Austrian borders. The dark mountains that surround it are so massive that it seems dominated and recluse in silence, and it even looks as if Mount Watzmann (2,713 m) shadows the sun. Berchtesgaden is also the Obersalzberg plateau, where Hitler had his summer quarters, and the Kehlstein mountain (1,834 m), where the eagle's nest still clings, as if by the greatest of miracles, to its dark legends, but forever tainted by history. The easiest way to reach Königssee is via St. Bartholomew.
