The permanent collection of this museum highlights the works of the expressionist art movement Der blaue Reiter.

Painter Franz von Lenbach (1836-1906) had this residence built between 1887 and 1891. In 1924, his wife sold the property to the town, along with some of her late husband's works.

Villa Lenbach. Today, the mansion has been transformed into a painting gallery, and the artist's former home has been integrated - literally incorporated - into an ultra-modern building, built between 2009 and 2013 to designs by Foster + Partners. Part of the museum allows visitors to discover what remains of the original villa of the painter Franz von Lenbach, nicknamed "the prince of painters".

The collection. Most of the works on display in the Lenbachhaus were created by painters of the Der blaue Reiter ("the Blue Rider"), a movement founded by Vassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc in 1911. The museum's permanent exhibition pays tribute to this brief artistic episode in the history of German painting, which has often been likened to Fauvism for its expressiveness and broad color palette. Numerous temporary exhibitions are held each year: Art Nouveau, photography, etc.

Visitors can marvel at the majestic building, inspired by the Italian style. Its idyllic garden and bubbling fountains offer a little corner of paradise, as do the rooms in the artist's residence, whose intimate atmosphere was carefully maintained during renovations by renowned architects Foster + Partners. The museum's café, Ella, offers a wide variety of culinary delights.
