Located off the coast of the Quirimbas National Park, the archipelago's capital city lives to the rhythm of the tides. Last victim of Cyclone Kenneth in late April 2019, the island saw thousands of tin huts and straw roofs fly away with a heavy human toll: 41 dead. The whole island has mobilized to restore the grandeur of this Garden of Eden. Ibo is the point of radiation in the Quirimbas Islands. Its 10 km2 of colonial city make it one of the largest islands of the archipelago. Some say that it is a miniature replica of Mozambique Island, but less known, less accessible, less touristy... Ibo has undoubtedly a lot of charm. Here, no bridges, no cars, no overcrowding, but vast alleys where the roots of old trees bend the ruins. Only one fifth of the island is inhabited. It is home to the São João Baptista fort, facades covered with shells, a café-boutique-sewing school or the production of Cafe do Ibo. The rest is nature, rice fields, mangroves and contemplation. It floats in the atmosphere the pleasant sensation of end of the world. The walk that leads from the fortress to the lighthouse is sumptuous. In the evening, sitting on the low wall, you can watch the sun set behind the mangrove or you can join it for a last bath. On the island of Quirimba in the south, we meet the Makua people whose women's faces are covered with musiro, a beauty mask made of roots. Somewhere out of time, we sail through the archipelago on board an "authentic" dhow to Matemo.
