Gorongosa National Park covers 3 million hectares in the center of the country. It includes neighboring Mount Gorongosa (1,863 m), where rivers rise to irrigate the surrounding plateaus and the plain at the bottom of a valley. Today, the heart of the national park seems to be beating again, after more than ten years of intense efforts to reintroduce and conserve a wildlife that is becoming more plentiful thanks to the extraordinary involvement of an American billionaire, Greg Carr. In addition to numerous elephants and several hundred lions, it boasts large populations of buffalo, wildebeest, zebra and antelope, including cob, impala and eland, as well as crocodiles and hippos in its rivers.
