Beira is the country's third largest city, after Maputo and Nampala, with a population of nearly 550,000. Seen from the air, it looks like hundreds of ochre-colored cultivated plots of land that fit together like a puzzle. Villages of huts and some white buildings and colonial houses near the ocean. Coconut trees have colonized the land, sandbanks stretch out into the turquoise blue at low tide. Seen from up close, the city looks like a little sister of Maputo. The houses, the colonial buildings, many of which are Art Deco style, follow one another, suggesting their former beauty. However, here, there are very few fifteen-story buildings and none of them should still exist in about thirty years: their lack of maintenance will get the better of their skeleton, sooner or later. The city seems barely patched up, since it was devastated and 90% flooded by Hurricane Ida in 2019, and swept by other tropical storms since.
