Tofo and Tofinho are two beaches bordering a small peninsula that ends in Barra to the north (20 minutes by 4 x 4). They are separated by a small headland, easily crossed at low tide by a 15-minute walk. Tofo beach is a north-facing cove with a wide, fine-sand beach. Tofinho beach is wilder, with more rocks, fewer sandy stretches and, above all, more waves. In Tofo, a conglomeration of low-rise houses and guesthouses has immediate access to the beach. Part of the village is perched on a hill facing the ocean. The low, sandy streets are centered around a fish market and local bars that are bustling day and night. On its magnificent central beach, you can enjoy a cocktail, laze on the fine sand, surf, swim or get a massage on tables laid right on the sand. In Tofinho, rows of large houses perched on stilts, sometimes far from the sea, are a succession of self-catering accommodations, more like a small vacation village for South Africans with boathouses. In the evening, the beach comes alive in Tofo. Youngsters from the village come to play soccer, and surfers arrive with boards under their arms to ride the waves into the sunset. The last two weeks of December are dominated by South African students on spring break, and August is a busy month for Europeans. The rest of the year, it's pretty quiet, apart from a few good parties held regularly throughout the week. Tofo is rather trendy and festive, without being flashy.
