Razed in June 1944 by 250 American heavy bombers, Villers-Bocage saw the first stone of its 12-year reconstruction laid in March 1948. The town has preserved its prefabricated Jeep-style housing, which can be seen on either side of Rue Jean-Caby. Labeled a "Village Étape", located at the northern exit of the A84 freeway, close to Bayeux and Vire, the town is a welcoming and peaceful stopover with its shops, hotels, restaurants and motorhome parks, for those wishing to continue their journey either towards the Cotentin region and Brittany, or towards the Pays d'Auge and the nearby D-Day beaches.
