Fajã is one of Cape Verde's most beautiful bays, set between the sea and an imposing green mountain. Embedded in the sheltered bay, the village has excellent rocky anchorages and natural swimming pools. The seafront is home to a number of attractive houses, most of them belonging to Cape Verdean emigrants returning home to spend their golden years. This small town is also a very fertile, flower-filled area where coconut palms, banana trees and tamarind trees make for a very bucolic atmosphere. For the record, it was here that the Matilde sank in 1943 with some fifty would-be emigrants.
