The island's capital lies at an altitude of 520 m, in an ancient volcanic crater. It's a little like Portugal with its old-world charm. Here, the art of flowering is cultivated; hibiscus is king and mingles with bougainvillea, jasmine and frangipani, releasing intoxicating scents. Public gardens bring out the exotic alongside the simple yet elegant houses that line the cobbled streets. In the center, on a flower-filled square, you'll find a map carved in stone and a plaque in memory of Eugenio Tavares. Born on the island in 1867, this poet, dear to the hearts of the Bravenses, is also one of the greatest composers of morna.
