Perched on a mountain to the west, this village was important not only for its agricultural potential, but also for the dynamism of its social and sporting festivities. In colonial times, the mere existence of a reservoir prompted many people to flock to Curral Grande in search of the precious liquid. Over the years, however, the population has dwindled, but since 2009 we've seen the return of retired emigrants, and the village has seen a good rate of new construction. Further south, you can stop off at São Lourenço to see the church run by Italian religious, whose patron saint's day is August 10.
