With around 22,000 inhabitants, this municipality is the island's capital. At the foot of a black sand beach, São Filipe rises on a cliff above the port of Vala de Cavaleiros. It used to be the island's namesake, but since the eruption of 1785, it has been renamed Fogo, meaning "Fire". São Filipe is most famous and attractive for its sobrados dating from the 18th and 19th centuries. These mansions, which housed wealthy Portuguese landowners, were built on two floors, the first of which was reserved for the owner, and into which slaves were only allowed on exceptional occasions. These "lords", known as morgados, showed their social status by building these houses. The sobrados are painted in pastel colors, generally adorned with wooden or wrought-iron balusters, and the roofs topped with red tiles. Since 1930, most of these mansions have been bought up and maintained by the middle class, adding to the city's charm and wealth. The Presidio is a magnificent garden on the edge of a cliff from which you can observe Brava when the view is clear. It's a popular spot for São Filipe's inhabitants. This nostalgic town is quiet and restful. From the top of the cliff, it overlooks a beautiful black sand beach, ideal for lazing around. The market is located in the center of the town, and in addition to ultra-fresh fish, you'll find stalls selling a variety of produce on the ground, such as tropical fruit and vegetables...
