Chão Bom, a village located just before Tarrafal, is infamous for housing the famous concentration camp, nicknamed the "slow death camp", once so feared by the islanders. This penitentiary, built in 1936, received prisoners rejected from the common prisons on the mainland as well as political prisoners from Salazar's dictatorial regime. Today, it houses a small museum which recalls the deplorable living conditions of these outcasts, considered the most dangerous for Portuguese society at the time. On the coast, 2 km south of Tarrafal, surfing and windsurfing enthusiasts will appreciate its beach.
