Far from being just a mountain to look at, and culminating at 1,063 m, the Serra Malagueta is experienced up close and invites the hiker to discover landscapes of great beauty: steep ridges, deep valleys, abundant vegetation... A veritable labyrinth of winding paths, steep slopes and improbable terraces, you'll enjoy impressive views of the ribeiras and, on a clear day, the island of Fogo. Several hikes are possible in this natural environment, including one down to Princal. You can then climb back up by aluguer. Good footwear is recommended, as the climb is around 1,000 m in height. At the bottom of the descent, grogue vendors offer you their comforting beverage. The other trek takes you over the Serra Malagueta mountains to Espinho Branco by the sea, a 4-hour walk. From the road leading from Assomada to Tarrafal, take a right-hand path into the mountains. Serra Malagueta is already a protected national park (entrance fee 200 CVE). You can stop off at the park's bar-restaurant. Today, the trails are guarded by lizards, spiders and butterflies, but a preservation program is trying to set up guides and marked paths to make these hikes less perilous. In the meantime, here's to 774 hectares of earthly paradise!
