In the center of Santiago, the plateau of Assomada is the most fertile area. Approximately 55,000 people live in this agricultural region with a strong commercial activity. In full expansion, Assomada is the second most important agglomeration of the island, a vast construction site which nevertheless preserves its soul thanks to its famous African-style market. It is the rallying point of all the surrounding populations. The women who go there are all dressed in the traditional way (loincloth around the hips and scarf tied on the head or baby on the back), creating a colorful atmosphere. The men wear shiny shirts, and their chests are often adorned with huge gold chains. You can buy animals as well as furniture, food and all sorts of utensils. Trade is everywhere, on the sidewalks, in makeshift stalls, sometimes on the ground. Nearby, there is the old museum dedicated to Tabanka (a tradition between Christianity and African beliefs) in the building of the postal sorting office, which was transformed into the Norberto Tavares Cultural Center, in honor of the composer. At Boa Entrada, you can admire the biggest tree in the archipelago, a huge centennial cheese tree, called Peï de Polom. Also worth seeing is the house where Amilcar Cabral grew up in Achada Falcão, the fishing village of Porto Rincão and its magnificent canyons, as well as the Engenhos valley where you can admire the work of the potters in the village of Fonte Lima.
