Small rural commune of around 680 inhabitants (known as the Viducasses), located south-west of Caen. Vieux abounds in vestiges of the proud city it was in the days of the Gallo-Roman Empire. In those days, the town was called Aregenua and had a population of 7,000! At its peak, towards the end of the 2nd century, Aregenua covered an area of 35 hectares, and was home to all kinds of dwellings, from the most humble to the most luxurious. Begun several decades ago, a major excavation program regularly uncovers new remains of this ancient city, housed since 2002 in a superb and fascinating archaeological museum.
