On leaving São Domingos, turn left onto the steep road leading to the village of Rui Vaz. It's possible to get there by aluguer. The road to Monte Tchota is magnificent, with superb panoramic views over Santiago. The vegetation is lush, tropical in places, with forests of pine, acacia and bougainvillea. It is now possible to stay at Rui Vaz, a starting point for hikes. From Quinta da Montanha, contact a local guide to climb Pico d'Antónia. Allow 5 hours round trip. You can also descend into the beautiful agricultural valley of São Jorge.
