Calheta is a small village located in a beautiful bay, 6 km north of Morro and 11 km from Vila do Maio. It is the cradle of traditional fishing and can be reached by turning left from the main road. Many of the seafood products consumed on the island (moray eels, horse mackerel and other varieties of fish) come from this serene hamlet, where life is punctuated by the return of fishing. At the end of the street, lined with sloping roofs covered with red tiles and white painted stones, is the bay. The beach in the Baxona neighborhood is one of the most discreet on the island. It is a very peaceful place where it is good to swim, all year round, in the calm waters of its two-colored bay (one part is made of black sand, the other of white sand). However, the water is probably clearer as you move away from the village. The colorful houses and boats of the small beach will undoubtedly inspire postcard lovers. Calheta is also the perfect place to buy locally woven bags. The village has benefited from the policy of reviving agriculture in terms of reforestation and livestock (goats, cattle and pigs are also raised here). On the horizon, towards the east, a green spot appears like a mirage: it is a forest of acacias which extends in a forest park of 16 km, until the villages of Morrinho and Cascabulho in the Terras Salgadas. This park is home to one of the few wild animals of the archipelago, feral populations of guinea fowl locally called galinha-do-mato
