Located on the other side of the island, to the southwest, in the arid zone, Tarrafal is about 1h15 by car from Porto Novo. A recently rebuilt cobblestone road leads to this isolated village at the end of the world - a place that must be earned. This is where the charm of this fishing village comes from, set between a very fishy area and an oasis overflowing with vegetation, which is very rare in the region. It is nestled at the foot of the mountain, facing the sea, which gives it an additional cachet. Sheltered from the wind by the surrounding mountains, this authentic destination bordered by a long wild beach of black sand is a high place of idleness, a haven of peace, where one would gladly prolong the stay. The inhabitants, fishermen or farmers, simple and particularly hospitable, live to the rhythm of the waves and the seasons. Going up to the north of the village, you reach Monte Trigo, another fishermen's village dominated by the highest mountain of Santo Antão, of volcanic origin, the Tope de Coroa, which culminates at 1979 m of altitude. Among the many hikes to be done on this island, the one connecting Tarrafal to Monte Trigo is undoubtedly a little difficult but very pleasant because it follows the coastline. The challenge is to cover 11 km in a little more than 5 hours, following a paved path from beginning to end, steep in places. At the end, wonderful views on the volcanic landscapes which promise to put stars in the eyes. The best thing to do is to meet a fisherman to return by sea. This is an opportunity to see whales on their migration route or other marine animals such as dolphins playing in the wake of the boats, with a little luck. And why not opt directly for a fishing session or a full-day sea trip with a local? To do so, ask the locals in one of the two villages and negotiate the excursion, including a snorkeling stop and drinks if needed. Going with them on their heavy colored boats, in a good mood, will be a memorable adventure. It is also an opportunity to observe marine birds, such as ospreys or red-billed tropicbirds, recognizable by their graceful long and fine rectal feathers. Being off the coast, we also have the opportunity to better appreciate the imposing silhouette of the Tope de Coroa
