Situated on the other side of the island, in the arid south-west, Tarrafal is a little more than 2 hours and 15 minutes away from Porto Novo. A stony track leads to this remote village at the end of the world - it's a place that has to be earned. This is where all the charm of this fishing village comes from, an oasis overflowing with vegetation, which is very rare in the region. It is nestled at the foot of the mountain, facing the sea, which gives it an extra cachet. Far from the worries of the world, sheltered from the wind by the surrounding mountains, this oasis bordered by a black sandy beach is a mecca for idleness, a haven of peace. Inhabitants, whether fishermen or farmers, live to the rhythm of the waves and the seasons. Going up north of the village, you reach Monte Trigo, another fishing village dominated by Santo Antão's highest mountain, Tope Coroa (1,979 m).
