It is a village, with its fishing port, which is located on the coastal road, east of Ribeira Grande. The sea is quite rough and the winds are quite strong in the area. Just before arriving, take a look to the right at the promontory where stands the Fontes Pereira de Melo lighthouse, named after a Portuguese governor who revolutionized transportation. It guided ships for a long time but is no longer operational. A hiking trail runs along the coast and continues for 15 km to Porto Novo. The landscape is less exuberant than in the ribeiras but this little visited area, between mountain and coast, will seduce the solitary walkers
