From its former name of Carvoeiros, this is the island's port, completely redeveloped in the 1960s and renovated in 2012 with a brand-new, modernized ferry terminal. Its quay is 133 m long and 7 m deep. Thanks to the port's activity, the town is quite lively. Around 15,000 people live here year-round. Located opposite Mindelo, it is the ferry landing and departure point for all arrivals to Santo Antão and the exit point for all agricultural produce grown on the island. This is where you'll find a host of cabs and aluguers, ready to take visitors to the four corners of the island. Porto Novo is constantly evolving, as evidenced by the brand-new vegetable and fish market. Nearby, there are two black sand beaches, Praia Tesina and Corralete, on the road to Janela, which contrast with the mountains. The area around the town is rather barren and arid, but as soon as you take the first few bends in theestrada corda, the vegetation becomes quite spectacular. Porto Novo is a central point from which you can easily get around: just over an hour from Ponta do Sol or the Paúl valley, it's also the only road to Tarrafal (a good 2-hour drive). Finally, Porto Novo enjoys a sunny climate all year round. While all other parts of the island are constantly fogged in and "cold" in winter, here the sky remains azure and the temperatures mild.
