About fifteen kilometers from Mindelo, it is one of the favorite beaches of the Mindelenses, ideal for lazing around, swimming and water sports. Some lucky members of the wealthy class have even built their second homes there. It takes its name from the harmless sandy cat sharks that roam its warm waters. It is a kind of natural swimming pool with a chain of rocks on which appear huge madrepores, corals that form a barrier against the waves and currents. Parents can therefore let their children splash around in peace. Sometimes people come here on weekends, with their families, to grill fish in the Cape Verdean style. Be careful because the sea can sometimes be dangerous, and be careful with your belongings, robberies have been reported. The municipality has carried out major development work, including the resurfacing of the beach, the creation of play areas for children and the installation of garbage cans, sanitary facilities and a podium for the annual music festival, which is accused of heavily polluting the area. The festival has been held there since the 1980s and takes place in August, bringing together on stage the greatest Cape Verdean, African and Caribbean musicians. Local mega-stars Cesária Évora and Marisa have performed there several times. It is now home to thousands of people who gather to dance and sing for three days under the full moon. You can also walk along the beach on the dunes side, if the wind allows it.
