Eagerly awaited by the Cape Verdeans, the carnival is above all a popular feast prepared with great enthusiasm by all Mindelenses at least one month in advance. It takes place every year in Mindelo between February and March and is the little brother of Rio Carnival. It has become one of the most important cultural manifestations of Cape Verde, whose reputation is beginning to transcend its borders. It mobilizes the entire population of the island of São Vicente and many people come from other islands and from all over the world to participate in the festival. The tanks and samba schools offer a performance worthy of Rio in Brazil, colourful, original and popular. This is an example for the other islands, which also organise their carnival on the same, smaller but equally festive model; that of São Nicolau, at the same time and that is a success.
