To the south of Calejão, 16 km from Ribeira Brava, follow the airport road, which offers a glimpse of the valley. You'll also discover the Ribeira Seca road, which leads to an inactive volcano with a huge caldera. As you walk around it, you can admire Monte Bissau, with a view of Preguiça just below. This village was once a trading port and an important whaling station. Take a tour and discover fragments of history, including cannons and defensive walls. The remains of its fort, built in the early 19th century to protect against pirates, and the ruins of the customs house (only the blue chapel has survived) remind us that the island once enjoyed a period of prosperity. The maritime history of Preguiça - and its context in world traffic - is interesting. On his way to Brazil, Pedro Alvares Cabral was advised by the king to dock first at São Nicolau for supplies before continuing on his way. It was on these reefs that he lost one of the ships in his fleet - the São Jorge - which explains why the bay is still known today as Baía de São Jorge.Today, Preguiça's main activity is small-scale fishing. The atmosphere is rustic and tranquil. You can watch the brightly-colored fishing boats haul in the catch. There's also a pebble beach where you can swim. If you're feeling a bit peckish, ask the friendly owners to serve you a dish at the local buvette. Unsurprisingly, the specialities are fish and lobster.
