This tiny village is about 3 km from Ribeira Brava. Here, you can visit the orphanage that took in and trained young girls from 1943 onwards, on the site of the bishops' former residence. Education was strictly religious, and the girls not only learned to read, write and count, but were also instructed in the art of service. They were then placed as servants in the homes of wealthy families. Caleijão was the birthplace of Baltasar Lopes da Silva, author of the famous novel Chiquinho, considered the greatest masterpiece of Cape Verdean literature and studied in all Portuguese-speaking countries.
