Hikers are all familiar with Cachaço (pronounced "cachasso"), as it is the almost obligatory starting point for climbing Monte Gordo. From this palm-fringed village, the highest in the Fajã valley, you have a splendid view of Monte Cintinha, part of the island and the coast below. Here, to the west of Ribeira Brava, you're surrounded by mountains, in a wonderfully preserved and unspoilt natural setting. It's also a fantastic geographical landmark, because from here you can choose to go anywhere, Tarrafal, Fajã, Ribeira Brava and even to the north-western valleys.
