7 km northwest of Espargos, it is the main port of the island. Everything has to be imported to Sal, and Palmeira is constantly busy unloading containers. It has large storage facilities, a desalination plant - lack of fresh water is a recurring problem - and a power plant serving the whole island. The small town is picturesque, made up of low Portuguese-style houses painted in bright colors, and residents gather under the shade of a large tree near the harbor to play music. Just outside the town, a small oasis of palm trees explains the name Palmeira
