This city takes its name from a variety of small wild asparagus that used to grow on the sandy soil of Cape Verde. Since then, the vegetable plant has disappeared, but the name has remained. Its development is linked to the construction in 1939 of a transit airport built by the Italians to serve flights between Europe and South America, and later taken over by the Portuguese colonial government. Today it is the main city of the island, a sort of administrative capital in full expansion, located ten minutes from the international airport and half an hour by car from Santa Maria. You can also walk to and from the airport, as the entire road is lined with a pedestrian walkway. Unlike Santa Maria, Espargos is a "real" Cape Verdean city, with its administrative center, city hall, a new residential suburb and a market. If you want to do some shopping, you will also find all kinds of shops and the prices are lower than in Santa Maria. It is also another face of the island of Sal, much more Cape Verdean, far from the tourist complexes of Santa Maria, with the district of Preguiça, its historic downtown area lined with small colored houses. You can see women selling fruit on the ground while men play cards and eat popcorn in the shade of the trees that shade the small square. It's worth a stroll to get a glimpse of daily life in the island's only real city.
