Povoação Velha (Old Town) is the oldest village on the island, dating back to the end of the 16th century. It was here that the settlement of Boa Vista began, which at that time was home to the 1,500 people who made up the entire population. Povoação was built here, at the foot of the Rocha Estância, because the inhabitants were seeking to escape the pirates that plagued the coast, but also because of the nearby water sources. Today, the village has only 600 souls who develop an essentially agricultural activity and see 4x4s and quad bikes passing by on their way to the southern beaches
