Located at the crossroads of two neighbouring countries, Switzerland and Italy, the area around Landeck, which overlooks the Inn valley, has been occupied by humans since prehistoric times. In Roman times, the town of Landeck was an important part of the Via Augusta, the state road from the Reschenpass to Augsburg. The valley was enriched by the trade in goods. A strong tradition of patronage encouraged the development of the arts, and the Baroque period saw the rise of regional artists, including Andreas Kölle, who were known throughout the country. On the right bank of the Inn, on its hill, the castle houses the Regional Museum.
