With its well-kept houses and farms, Umhausen is a beautiful village that has made the most of the discovery of the 5,300-year-oldHibernatus, or Ötzi, the Iceman, whose mummy was found by two German hikers in 1991. Its well-preserved state has enabled scientists to better understand the lifestyles of hunter-gatherers in the Alps during the Neolithic period. His death - Ötzi suffered an arrow wound to the shoulder - is the source of much speculation. Founded under the technical direction of the University of Innsbruck, the entertaining Ötzidorf archaeological park offers reconstructions, animations and documentary screenings.
