Together with Enns and Steyr, Wels is one of the peaks of the historical, cultural and heritage triangle of Upper Austria outside Linz. It was in Wels that Emperor Maximilian I died in 1519. At first sight, the city centre looks like a very large industrial suburb of Linz, but it is a pleasant surprise. It is clean and cheerful, quite pretty, and lively. In addition, there are many cultural and sports activities. Check out the Haas Hof at 34 Stadtplatz, a 16th-century arcaded courtyard that bears witness to the city's artistic and commercial contacts with Renaissance Italy.
