These gardens are one of Viennese residents' favorite places to relax and stroll.
These are the oldest baroque gardens in Vienna. Their layout has remained unchanged since the 17th century, but during the 19th and 20th centuries they underwent significant changes in status. Leopold I had Favorita's garden laid out and Emperor Joseph II opened it to the public. The garden soon became one of the favourite places for relaxation and strolling among the Viennese, especially among the more popular social strata. It was also a place of festivities, as many fairs, balls and concerts were held here. During these festivities, Mozart, Schubert and Beethoven had the opportunity to perform in the open air. In 1922, the workshops of the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory were installed in the Baroque palace overlooking Obere Augarten. At the same time, the Social Democrat municipality had four youth sports fields built in the middle of the park. The Nazis then erected two massive air defence towers. Today, the Viennese municipality, which has not been able to destroy them despite numerous attempts (they are very solid!), has decided to keep them as they are, without really knowing what to do with them. In 1948, after the war, the "Wiener Sängerknaben" (Vienna Wooden Cross Singers) took over the workshops. Today they occupy the large, flamboyant baroque castle. Without doubt one of the city's jewels, the gardens of Augarten are particularly well maintained and the impeccable carpets of flowers and lawns are a feast for the eyes.
