The KunstHausWien or Hundestwasser Museum was Austria's first Green Museum! It is dedicated to the eco-friendly artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000), who made no concessions to consumer society. Very committed to the environment, Hundertwasser was a pioneer in the defense of sustainable development. In his way of life, as in his works, his desire to safeguard the planet and to listen to nature as closely as possible is omnipresent. A beautiful film provides a better understanding of his innovative thinking and his commitments as an artist and a citizen. The museum occupies the former Bugholz furniture factory, which has been completely refurbished and decorated to create a warm, open space. And it's an enchantment of cheerful, original and colorful architecture, with planted spaces, flowing water, undulating floors, colors that pop, gold and silver, wood and ceramics, glass, bricks, stones, metal, spaces for dreaming and resting, and a planted roof terrace that hosts artists in residence (not open to the public). This Kunst Haus Wien (Vienna Artists' House) programs temporary exhibitions of contemporary art. Closed for renovation for a few months, with the aim of further reducing its carbon footprint, the museum reopened on February 29, 2024, in time to host Vienna's first Climate Biennale.
On the first floor are a boutique and an eco-friendly, inclusive café-restaurant with a superb terrace in the courtyard.

Welcome to the Kunst Haus Wien and the Hundertwasser Museum, Austria's first Green Museum - a label, for short, whose logo was designed by Hundertwasser himself! In a building designed by Hundertwasser in 1991, the Kunst Haus and the Hundertwasser Museum preserve the soul and values of this artist, who left his mark on the city of Vienna with his avant-garde ideas as early as the second half of the 20th century. He was already a forerunner in the promotion of sustainable development and was very concerned about the environment. His architectural works, moreover, do not deceive: whether it is in the Fernwärme (incineration plant of Vienna), in the thermal village of Blumau, or even in the Hundertwasser Haus (whose facade can be admired a few blocks away from there), the idea of the safeguard of the planet is omnipresent. Here, the tour of the place starts as soon as the doors of the building have been opened (practical tip: put your shoes on, the ground is uneven to say the least!). The first two floors are devoted to permanent exhibitions on the artist and his works - colourful and quirky, they always have a metaphorical significance -, while temporary exhibitions, in the refurbished garage and in the basement, invite eclectically talented contemporary artists to deal with the theme of ecology in one way or another. On the upper floors, photography is in the spotlight, with once again regularly renewed temporary exhibitions. Before leaving, don't miss the café-restaurant on the ground floor.
