A territory occupied since the Bronze Age, Witterheim is first and foremost a dependency of the Rathsamhausen family, which forced the villagers to go to the Protestant temple in Diebolsheim to practice their religion. After the extinction of this family, the village reverts to several owners. Nearby was a mound known in the region as Lieberain and surmounted by a large lime tree under which people danced until the end of the 19th century. At this time, weaving is an essential and enriching activity for the inhabitants.
