Threatened by spring avalanches, this small village of some 290 inhabitants is now protected by an impressive structure following a tragic accident in 1995 which killed 20 people. Flateyri is a pleasant stopover, set in a beautiful area that was admired by Norwegian whalers stationed here until 1901. In the past, this village was very difficult to reach in winter, and most of the time could only be reached by sea. Today, access to this charming village is facilitated by the Vestfjarðagöng tunnel from Isafjördur. The town has also been the setting for several films, including Rúnar Rúnarsson's Sparrows. Here you'll find a swimming pool, a post office, a petrol station (with snack bar) and a campsite.
